The Myth Of Targeted Weight Loss

Stubborn Belly Fat

There are some myths out there that you can just target a specific area of your body and reduce the fat there using exercises or devices. Only surgery can do that, and there are some issues that can occur due to surgical fat removal. Fat cells are distributed around your body. Depending on your gender and your genes, more cells will be distributed in certain areas. As the body begins to store fat, it distributes it among all the fat cells in your system. The areas more crowded with fat cells will increase in size the most; belly, love handles, thighs, etc. So in order to reduce the size of your belly, you have to reduce the amount of fat in your whole body.

Liposuction to the Rescue

So what if you're great with everything else, it's just that belly you need to get rid of? Is Liposuction the answer? Well, in some cases it is, but those cases are much less common than the number of liposuction procedures that are performed each year... In other words, don't ask a plastic surgeon if you need it, ask your regular doctor. The issue with Liposuction is that often people seek it because they don't want to go on a diet, they want to get thin quickly. Those people, even though they can get rid of a lot of belly fat in a liposuction session, they still have habits that will cause them to consume more calories than they burn. This is where they get into trouble. Fat is going to be distributed among the remaining fat cells in the body, causing other areas that were previously proportional to get bloated out. Where a chubby belly or hips doesn't look so great, it at least looks natural, whereas excess fat on the arms and neck looks pretty scary!

Gastric Bands and Gastric Bypass

While these are often touted as the answer to obesity, they are surgical measures and they are extreme. The objective here is to cause a person to change their behavior by limiting how much food their stomach can contain. Patients can feel a lot of discomfort when trying to eat more than a small meal, and these methods are still not guaranteed to make a person lose weight. As with many surgeries, there are risks of long-term complications and death.
